Following Jesus comes with expectations.
We tell people truths that are both beautiful and biblical: God loves us, forgives us, hears our prayers, gives our lives purpose, and calls us into relationship with Him. But when those truths are separated from the fuller teaching of Jesus, we can accidentally produce believers with true information but incomplete expectations.
Incomplete discipleship creates unrealistic expectations. And unrealistic expectations create fragile faith. Jesus never hides the terms of discipleship. We sometimes do. He speaks honestly about pain, opposition, weakness, peace, and the hope of what is still to come. Maybe one reason Christians become disillusioned with Jesus is that we introduced them to a version of Christianity Jesus never actually offered.
The Expectation Divide is a five-week journey toward mature faith. Each week asks two questions:
What did Jesus actually tell us to expect from following Him?
What have we expected from God that God never promised us?
This is not a call to expect less from Jesus. It is an invitation to let Jesus reshape our expectations around what He actually taught and promised. Mature faith is not built on an easier version of Christianity, but on the whole truth of Christ.
